Woman in Progress: Ondine Cowley at Nicky Clarke

Before I met Ondine, I’d never really understood the whole idea of being loyal to a particular hairdresser.  They’re all much the same I thought to myself. They aren’t. Ondine Cowley, 3rd Senior Stylist at Nicky Clarke in London and a wedding specialist, has been cutting my hair and telling me exactly what to do (and not to do) with it for years now. She also cuts the hair of celebrities and royals, but I guess she can’t cut my hair everyday... She’s also one of the most open, warm and lovely people you could happen to come across, even if they didn’t have a pair of scissors in their hands! We’re thrilled Ondine’s agreed to be our Woman in Progress this week.

Woman in Progress: Ondine Cowley at Nicky Clarke

What’s the one thing in your life that makes things easier?

My car! I love driving, it gives me the freedom to go wherever I want.

What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?

My dog Mr Wolseley, he’s the love of my life and he brings so much joy to me and my family.

What do you love to do for fun?

I love entertaining (hosting dinner parties) and I adore going to see a great play!

What one piece of advice would you give yourself 5 years ago?

Don’t be so hard on yourself, what will be will be.

What are you most proud of?

Building and retaining my career.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned at work?

Persistence is key. Start from the bottom and work your way up!

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned at home?

Keep it clean and have only good energy.

Did you expect to be doing what you’re doing right now?

Yes I did!

How did you end up doing what you’re doing?

I knew since the age of 11 what I wanted to do, which was odd as no one in my family did hair.

What top tip would you pass on to other women in progress reading this?

I have a few! Follow your passion and don’t let anyone take away your dream. Life is a fight worth fighting for. It’s still a man’s world so it’s so important to stand your ground.

Cocktails or coffee?

Are you done yet?  What’s next?

I’m definitely not done! 19 years in and I feel as if my career is just getting started. I love working with, and for, Nicky Clarke and it’s my second home. Work is my passion and I adore designing my clients’ hair - I can’t wait to see what the future will bring. I would of course love to meet the right man and have children but I’m glad my career was built first.

Thanks so much to Ondine, do follow her on Instagram for inspiration (and a peak into her life of work, travel and beautiful hair), we’re off to book an appointment!
