Woman in Progress: Laura Lea from Laura Lea Design

Our latest Woman in Progress is Laura Lea from Laura Lea Design.  Laura founded her Leytonstone boutique three years ago, and in that time her business has gone from strength to strength.  Laura's shop stocks fantastic artists and designers whose work just can't be found on the high street (it's a must-go place for great gifts) and Laura also organises pop-up exhibitions around London to expose the artists and designers she represents to new audiences.   We're delighted she's taken the time to answer our questions.

What’s the one thing in your life that makes things easier?

There is not 'one' thing that makes my easier.  I don't believe in the word 'easy' - if it was easy everyone would do it.

What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?

I can't live without my black Labrador Peggy, being her mother is the best thing that ever happened to me and she brings so much joy into my life.

What’s one thing that you would stop if you could?

If I could I would stop Trump.

What one piece of advice would you give yourself 5 years ago?

5 years ago I let too many people influence my ideas, I would tell myself to listen and trust my instincts.  It's very easy for other people to have all the answers when they have no responsibility.

What one piece of advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?

10 years ago I wasted time trying to have children.  I think perhaps had I been asked if it was what I really wanted rather then what I thought I should do I would not have pursued it and perhaps my business could have been born sooner.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned at work?

Get good at one thing at a time, make that one thing perfect, totally refined, infallible and polished then move on and make the next thing perfect.

What top tip would you pass on to other Women in Progress reading this?

My tip to the women is to be selfish.  Put yourself first.  I spent alot of my time looking after other people's needs when it either was not my place to do so or it was detrimental to me.

Are you done yet?  What’s next?

Never done, never finished, never not working on bigger better ideas, there is nothing I would not do to keep what I have built.  I have just completely refurbished the gallery and I am looking forward to popping up at the 'Festival of Inspiration' for Stylist Live in November.

Do pop into Laura's amazing shop if you're ever near Leytonstone (she has amazing gifts - perfect for some Christmas presents from off the high street), she also has an online shop - or follow her on Instagram (see the gallery below) for design inspiration.
